LDPE film greenhouses and low tunnels have the following advantages:
- These
increase carbon dioxide levels, leading to better photosynthesis.
- Plant
growth is improved and plants mature faster.
- Use
of water is optimised due to reduced evapotranspiration. Upto
40-50% of water can be saved.
-
Use of UV stabilized film can filter out harmful Ultra-Violet
rays .
- Off-season
cropping is possible and also effective for raising high value
seeds in floriculture nurseries .
- The
crop is protected from wind, storm, rain and frost.
- The incidence of disease and pests is reduced.
- It increases temperature inside enabling crop production in hilly regions and cold climate. LDPE film greenhouses and low - tunnels have been extremely beneficial for cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, lettuce, onion, spinach, brinjal, pepper, turnip, radish, capsicum and tobacco crops. Flowers like roses, chrysanthemums and carnations have also been successfully cultivated.
It has been successfully used in Leh, by households. Commercial production of floriculture in Nasik and Bangalore for export and domestic market has proved highly economical, initial trials for growing of nurseries and off-season fruits and vegetables have been encouraging in North East.
